CMS Enviro Systems Ltd, based in Cumbernauld, was established in 2000 to manufacture and install window and door units, predominantly for local customers.
The judges were impressed with the strong commitment shown to the environment, especially from senior management. The company has had ISO14001 EMS accreditation since 2003 and shows innovation with a patented product in place; the zero carbon window system.
CMS has a Sustainable Business Strategy which states that they can recycle 100% of windows taken out of contracts and also accept windows from non contract jobs. A strong sustainability ethos was demonstrated in all of their activities and communications. Both internal and external communications are well managed and take place with suppliers, stakeholders and customers in various forms, including a very informative company website.
Reporting and monitoring practices are excellent and demonstrate that the company considers its environmental impacts, and how to reduce them, on an everyday basis. Environmental and economic benefits include:
• Wastage of pvc and aluminium reduced by 90% through the introduction of a barcode tracking system that is used throughout the manufacturing and installation process.
• The reduction in the use of skips realised a saving of £17,000.
• £3,000 of savings was achieved through improved lighting systems.
• The biomass heating system allows wood waste to be used effectively, reducing waste sent to landfill and also reducing gas use by £1,400 per annum.
• PDA’s installed in the transport fleet have resulted in a CO2 saving of 3.6 tonnes per engineer per year.
• A car share scheme for employees to reduce transport impacts
• An estimated overall CO2 saving of 14.6 tonnes through implementation of all of the measures detailed above.
CMS Enviro Systems Ltd has Investors in People accreditation and aims to provide a new training centre that will engage suppliers, new employees, and improve the welfare and commitment of the staff. The company also supports local and global charities with regular monthly donations.
The judges were encourage by CMS Enviro Systems future plans to build upon their green business credentials, with investigation into further improvements of their products and processes in addition to new projects.
